The stories to the left represent just a few of the stories that come to the Stem Cell Program at Children’s Hospital every day – stories about parents fighting to be sure that their children have a future; about teenagers and young adults who ask just to live a normal, pain-free life; about tiny patients who don’t yet know what huge obstacles they face just to be able to live.

A December 1, 2010 article in the Boston Globe‘s business section highlights the work of Verastem Inc., a local company for which Children’s Hospital Boston’s Dr. George Daley is on the scientific advisory board. “The founding scientists and advisors of Verastem are some of my favorite colleagues,” said Dr. Daley. “I am looking forward to the quest to find drugs that kill the rare cells that sustain some cancers.” Read More.

Dr. George Daley comments on the possibility of converting specialized cells directly to other specialized cells. While other researchers are reporting very early successes, clinical trials are a long way off. “There’s a lot of experiments failing,” Daley told Forbes. “A lot of people are just taking a trial-and-error approach, and that’s fundamentally inefficient. On June 8, 2010, the International Society for Stem Cell Research (ISSCR) has launched “A Closer Look at Stem Cell Treatments”. Closerlookatstemcells.org, is a website designed to arm patients, their families and doctors with information they need to make decisions about stem cell treatments.

The website was developed in response to the growing number of aggressive marketing campaigns on the Internet and elsewhere offering stem cell treatments. The ISSCR urges individuals to be cautious and to learn the facts before making any decision.

Restoring immune function in mice

Children’s Hospital Boston researcher George Q. Daley, MD, PhD, then at the Whitehead Institute, was the first to demonstrate, in 2002, that pluripotent stem cells could successfully treat immune deficiency in a mouse model when combined with gene therapy. The research team created genetically matched embryonic stem cells through nuclear transfer, introduced corrective genes, then derived healthy blood stem cells and infused them into the mice, partially restoring their immune function.
